Are you looking for a challenging ski area? Blue Mountain Ski Resort in Pennsylvania may be the ticket! This beautiful resort near Palmerton, PA is in the gorgeous Lehigh Valley on Blue Mountain. It is within driving distance of several major cities, including Philadelphia, Wilmington and New York City.
The resort is home to the highest vertical in Pennsylvania and to some of the longest runs on the East Coast. The resort offers skiing, tubing and boarding all winter long. There are also a variety of off-season activities including downhill mountain biking, disc golf, action archery, outdoor laser tag, zip lining, low ropes challenge course, and climbing walls.
The resort is perfect for hosting team building sessions or corporate meetings and offers special packages for weddings or other special events. First opened in 1977, the resort was originally called Little Gap Ski Area. In 1989, it was renamed Blue Mountain and celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2007.
The resort offers beginners two beginner slopes on a teaching hill. It was also the first ski resort in Pennsylvania to have the BigAirBag which allows skiers to practice aerial maneuvers. In 2011, Blue Mountain partnered with the U.S. Luge Association to become a U.S. Luge Training facility. The Natural U.S. luge track at Blue Mountain is the only public track on the east coast.
Blue Mountain is incredible with an elevation of more than 1,400 feet. The vertical elevation is just over 1,000 feet making it the biggest vertical drop on a Pennsylvania ski resort. This mountain includes not only the state’s highest vertical, but also the highest glade trails and long runs. The mountain boasts a terrain mix that covers more than 39 slopes. There is truly something for every skier and snowboarder to enjoy, no matter what level.
There are high-efficiency snow guns on Blue Mountain which provide 100 percent coverage that supplements the natural snow. The mountain is also home to six Terrain Parks designed for any skill level. The mountain also has snow tubing on 39 lanes and provides family-sized tubes so you and everyone in the family can tube the slopes together.
There is also a section dedicated to helping beginner skiers located next to the lodge. This area may be reached via two surface lifts or a double chair lift. There are three double chair lifts which take skiers up the western side. Here they will find the Expert and Novice Intermediate terrains. The Summit is serviced by a six-person lift and a high-speed quad. There are also three double chairs. The north-facing slope has an intermediate and a beginner trail. There are four expert runs which follow the chairlifts as they move toward the bottom of the mountain. There is also an access trail connecting the western half of the resort and the summit.
